ANTH 242 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Cortisol Awakening Response, Circadian Rhythm, Coronary Artery Disease
Document Summary
Field studies of salivary cortisol have proliferated over the past decade. Are basically limited to waking times, since you can"t collect saliva during sleep. As with catecholamine studies, one should be looking for changes in cortisol with lifestyle effects. Many studies, however, evaluate aspects of the diurnal rhythm of cortisol and not changes. Cortisol awakening response (car): -a part of the circadian cycle that has received a lot of attention in cortisol field studies is the cortisol awakening response. Cortisol increases dramatically about an hour or so before awakening and then continues to increase so that it peaks 30-45 minutes before awakening. Studies have found the car to increase or decrease with various health conditions: It increases with: coronary artery disease, upper respiratory illness, obesity, bipolar personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and depressive symptoms. It decreases with: poor quality sleep/primary insomnia, pain after surgery, functional. Gastrointestinal disorders, fatigue, post traumatic stress disorder, depression, and.
