Economy is the basis of society bourgeoisie. Early industrial society - lots of new wealth. New class rebels against aristocracy, introduces parliamentary democracy. Wants power & indv rights plus property rights. Conflicts between class provide all motivation for historical development/progress. Systems of production: selling goods/services to a wide range of consumers. Owners/ruling class: owns the capital, factories, large amounts of money and means of production. Workers: mass population, wage workers or working class who do not own the means of their livelihood but they create industrial wealth through their labor, finds their employment from owners. Pre-capitalism marx believed that workers were closely tied to the means of production -> they had greater control over the value of their labor. Capitalism prevent workers from placing value on their labor. Capitalism driven by the alienation of the worker and- labor is degraded.
