Document Summary

Meaning and situation which gives rise to it. The production of symbolic codes--the signs and symbols we use. How cultural signs affect people"s position in stratification systems. Reality as we perceive it is contingent upon social relationships and is the product of the day-to-day practices of human beings. Reality is socially constructed and the sociology of knowledge must analyze the processes in which this occurs . A quality appertaining to phenomena that we recognize as having a being independent of our own volition . The certainty that phenomena are real and that they possess certain characteristics . Sociologists attempt to understand how certain versions of reality come to be taken for granted, the differences in reality across time and cultures, and the impact on different groups. The sociology of knowledge must concern itself with everything that passes for knowledge" in society with what people know" as reality" in their everyday lives.
