Very broad legitimacy in eyes of general population by october 1939. Bolsheviks didn"t have same legitimacy and didn"t have an army. Red army was built with recruits from urban areas who were comfortable with hierarchy. City and state as key to revolution. Defined peasantry as core of revolution itself. Peasants are the water in which the communists must swim. Village and nation as key to revolution. Much less peasant resistance in china (early on, before the glf) with regards to communist collectivization gentler approach. China didn"t have as many ethnic minorities as russia. Ussr not established until 1922: neither a national nor ethnic component to the title. Both conducted periodic purges against top-level officials.
