PHYS ED 32 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Echocardiography, Angina Pectoris, Lipoprotein
Document Summary
Diseases of the heart and blood vessels; includes coronary artery disease, heart attack, stroke, heart failure. When significant, it results in ischemia : inadequate blood flow due to the constriction/obstruction of artery; oxygen supply less than oxygen demand. Form of cvd in which inner layers of artery walls are made thick & irregular by plaque deposits; arteries become narrowed & blood supply is reduced. Plaque : deposit of fatty & other substances on inner wall of an artery. Angina pectoris : condition where heart muscle doesn"t receive enough. Myocardial infarction (mi) : damage to, or death of, heart muscle, blood, causing severe pain in chest & often in arm & shoulder resulting from failure of coronary arteries to deliver enough blood to heart; aka heart attack. Stroke : occurs when blood supply to the brain is cut off. Pieces of plaque can break free, travel to the brain & block blood vessels that supply blood to the brain.
