Document Summary
Official citation : lone wolf v. hitchcock , 187 u. s. 553 (1903) Procedural history (case history): this case was part of a long string of treaties & legislative and judicial measures that displaced north america"s first peoples from their ancestral lands, hemmed them into reservations, and eventually detribalized them. In 1892, three indian tribes, kiowas, comanches, & apaches, signed a treaty with us government. Government sought a treaty that would reduce the size of the existing indian reservations so that some of the land could be allocated to whites and other non-indians. As part of this new treaty, each member of 3 tribes would receive 160 acres of land. The remaining land, almost 3 million acres, would be purchased by government for million & allocated to non-indians. During the course of negotiating this treaty, leaders of 3 tribes made several recommendations & changes to proposed treaty.
