Document Summary

Growing up, i was very aware of my parent"s feeling that where we were was not home-and that, for them, their true home, china, belonged to the past. My parents seldom talked about the past and they maintained a separateness from their present lives. I asked my mother a few years ago why she never brought up her past, and she said it was because i never asked. I do not think she was wrong, but i also think that it never occurred to me to ask, because it was never part of their lives--their leaving china and coming to the. States left them isolated, not just by the physical distance but from the historical and emotional distance as well--they were part of a china that was changed irrevocably by the politics of their day. Parents were trying to forget their past as well.
