Defined god as that than which nothing greater can be conceived , meaning god is greater than anything, including all thought and imagination. The word god is human understanding of this greater thing, meaning the word is not important, so god can exist without the word god --- the word can stop existing. Ontology- study of conversation about existential being. Anselm believed that god must exist, and cannot be understood to not exist, so god cannot not exist. Existence is the better state than nonexistence. One has to believe in order to understand. Anselm did not have a problem believing in god. He addressed god directly (like augustine did) Anselm"s search was in trying to get an understanding of something he believed. This approach was very similar to augustine.
