All monks were cloistered, but the community became more social as settlements grew around them. A commission to build more fancy churches to bring curious people in to hear the services. Often the clergy working these churches would deliver great hellfire and brimstone sermons and incorporated new music styles. As the second biggest church, cluny helped shape society, particularly focusing on the role of knights. Introduced the idea of using pilgrimages as penance for crimes. St. francis broke away by going into the streets to work.
