AET 1380 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Shure Sm57, Microphone, Sennheiser
Document Summary
Transducer, much like a speaker in reverse. Parts of a microphone: element, contains the diaphragm that is stretched over the coil, ribbon, or plates, along with other parts to complete the transducing process, much like an eardrum or phonograph, microphone technologies, magnetic induction. Ribbon: variable capacitance (condenser mics, all are methods of measuring the voltage/energy at the diaphragm, moving coil or dynamic mics, electromagnet. Wrap wire around a nail; connect the wires to a voltmeter; move it over a magnet and measure voltage/energy: characteristics. Capable of handling high spl: popular dynamic microphones. Sennheiser 421: ribbon microphones, magnetic induction. Microphone works much like its own diaphragm. It is made from a thin strip of metal suspended between a magnet. Electrical signal is measured by how fast the ribbon moves, not how far: early ribbon mics. Rca 44" series, rca 77" series: characteristics. Have a small output level = poor snr. Not used in high spl situations (high air pressure levels)
