Fusion of blues, ragtime, spirituals, work songs, and shout. 12 bar: actual structure, 3, 5, 7 and sometimes 9th notes are lowered half a step, gives the feeling of cradled and swung sounds. Swing: piece is able to move the beat forward, not everything swings. Spirituals: elements that make up the blues and gets incorporated into jazz, call and response. Worked out in the instruments: psalm singing style. Sing refrain and then congregation sings refrain: kinds of songs that developed out of slavery. Hammering of the rocks is kept in time with the music: song that was sung during work, could be found along chain gangs, work would be orchestrated around keeping the beat of the song. Band: 5-8 pieces and focused on the instruments, composed of trumpet or coronet. Played melody or embellished version: clarinet featured in a counter melody of the main tune, trombone improvised below the trumpet. Signaled chord changes: tuba or string bass.
