Accurate lmp: when the assessment of lmp is accurate, this is the most reliable estimator of gestational age. Naegele"s rule (+7 days, - 3 months, +1 yr) Uterine size: 20 wks gest = umbilicus; 1 cm q week. Size > dates: large parents; multiple fetuses. Size < dates: low amniotic fluid, lack of nutrition, iugr. Quickening: mom first feels baby move (16-20 wks nultips) Audible fht: electronic doppler @ 10 12 wks. Ultrasound: acc. measure of gestational age in 1st half of preg; not so much in second half b/c it becomes a fetus and fetus grows to be like parents (ppl always diff) Important pts get themselves into healthy state before having baby to mitigate problems optimizing pregnancy. Encourage diet/exercise, vitamins, folic acid ( risk of ontd) Important to foster nurse-patient bond during this time. For the visits, get their complete health history (med/surg, gyn, social, mental health, family, support system; initial labs and symptoms, danger signs, etc)
