Document Summary

The seven years war and north american war of independence. Democracy as a common political philosophy organizes most political activity around the world. Nationhood was always inevitable in coming into existence. Toussaint louverture -- changing the fate of what is occurring in haiti. There were about 90 of them in the development of the united states. Not just thomas jefferson and george washington. Classic american dream: came from the carribean from nothing. Not an immigrant coming from the english island of the carribean english colony in north america. Part of the same empire -- not moving across empires, nations, different linguistic groups. Part of a bigger rags to riches story -- social mobility. Americanness was an identity that needed to be constructed. Not a predetermined identity that already exists. Need to convince people that they are american -- contrast to english . The success of the war of independence showed an alternative to a world of empire.
