After stalin"s death, nikita khrushchev becomes the leader of the ussr. He never amassed the same power that stalin had, but did not want to follow in his footsteps. He was more amicable than stalin and was not as violent. His policies seemed like a type of easing. Polish people made it clear that they wanted freedom from soviet domination. Prime minister gomulka made it clear poland didn"t want out of the warsaw pact but did want independence. Their new administration was still totalitarian and still under russian influence. Hungary, led by nagy, had a rebellion in 1956 initiated by university students. Nagy announced he would support a radical reform program and called for soviet troops to leave hungary. Argued that hungary should have elections and radical social changes. Moscow ordered troops in in november 1956 to crush the revolution because they were afraid of losing their influence.
