1945 2 atomic bombs were dropped on hiroshima, japan which ended the pacific war. The cold war that developed afterwards was characterized by an arms race and the fighting of smaller wars around the globe where the soviets and the us backed other countries. Fought out in korea, the middle east, central america, etc. The two super powers after wwii were the ussr and the usa. The big three included stalin, fdr, and churchill. Stalin did not trust fdr and churchill, but all had a common enemy in germany. At a meeting in teheran, they decided to invade the west. This was a success to the soviets because the allies finally made a commitment to open the west. Feb 1945 they meet again at yalta to discuss the end of the war. At this time atomic weapons had not been guaranteed and the us was afraid the war against japan would drag on.
