Document Summary

Past spring at stanford (one of the first universities to get rid of western civ. ) had a controversy. Got rid of western civ. being a mandatory class. 1991: required two three credit classes; manageable potion of human history; important to european history and the impact of european institutions on the modern world. 2006: historical processes that lie behind modern-day transnational relationships; multiple cultures. Petition because people saw the 1991 description of history core and did not like the emphasis on europe, rather than other cultures. Bc revamped curriculum to bring in more cultures. Odd that europe is not learning about european history as much as americans are: us is thinking about europe as a thing when europe isn"t thinking about it as a thing. Global citizenship training part of intellectual training. Why should european history be required and not other histories. Bc: there should be some baseline information that is important to know.
