CSCI 1006 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Lipid Bilayer, Plastid, Mitochondrion

48 views3 pages

Document Summary

Mitochondria is the power house of the cell. The cell membrane regulates what enters and leaves the cell and also provides protection and support. Lipid bilayer: core of nearly all cell membranes. Every cell includes a liquid interior and is surrounded by liquid. Cell membrane regulates movement of molecules from one side of the membrane to the other. Concentration: mass of solute in a given volume of solution, mass/volume. Diffusion: molecules tend to move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Diffusion causes many substances to move across a cell membrane but does not require the cell to use energy. If a substance is able to diffuse across a membrane, the membrane is permeable to that substance. Most biological membranes are selectively permeable: some substances can pass across them while others can"t. Osmosis: process allowing water molecules to pass easily through most biological membranes.
