Document Summary

Genetic modification offers a method to quickly change a trait: getting rid of the weeds but allowing the plant to live. Majority of us crops are genetically modified: brazil and argentina lots of gm crops, corn and soybeans very popular, cotton. Gmo"s include animals: glo-fish- engineered to glow under uv light, aqua bounty salmon- grows twice as fast as chinook salmon. Construction of gm organisms involve deliberate manipulation of dna. The first genetically modified organism was e. coli: recombinant dna molecules are constructed using microbial enzymes, foreign dna can be introduced into bacteria on plasmids and bacteriophages. Most insulin is now produced by recombinant bacteria. Many copies of a dna sequence are easily obtained from transformed bacteria. Recombinant dna molecules must be introduced into the cell of choice: scientists use engineered strains of the bacterium, agrobacterium tumefaciens, to introduce foreign dna into many kids of plants, enters wounded areas and causes growth.
