BIOL1300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Toba People, Lahar, Long Path
Document Summary
Lecture 12: volcano disasters review: hazards of volcanoes. The most recent extremely large supereruption (300x krakatau) Possibly triggered an ice age, causing mass death of humans outside of tropical refugees. Smaller supervolcanoes that caused significant local damage and impacted the global climate for several years. A recent large eruption (0. 5 x krakatau) Demonstrates successes of modern warnings and evacuations. Volcanoes can occur at hotspots (e. g. hawaii) Volcanoes erode over time, if pressure from magma and gas does not push them upward. Volcanoes can rebuild and explode again (usually not in hawaii) Hawaiian volcanoes typically don"t cause explosive eruptions. Volcanoes do not grow due to an explosion. Hawaiian volcanoes seem to build up and then become extinct as the plate moves on from the hot spot, so it is unlikely that an extinct hawaiian volcano would become resurgent. However, this definitely happens in other places.
