Rome is most famous for their architecture (arch and dome) & invention of cement. Basilica: roman building used for law courts; transept: the cross on the basilica. Colosseum 80 ad columns were corinthian, ionic and doric. The last judgment relief on the autun cathedral. Pantheon 25 bc by marcus agrippa; rebuilt 125 ad has one of the largest domes; best example of roman art and inspires western architecture. Byzantine: 1st golden age: 550, 2nd: 843, 3rd: 1250. Iconoclastic controversy: iconoclasts wanted to destroy religious images and iconophiles loved it (725-850)
