ENG 2100 Lecture 1: Commenting Tips
Document Summary
Make sure your paper meets the demands of the type of writing. The work of the class: point to places in the writing where details are being used effectively or ineffectively. Discuss how the writer can change the structure of a few sentences to better convey his/her message. Commenting tips: do not butcher the paper everywhere with red marks, write in areas where the reader can still understand and read, only comment on what is necessary, explain your interpretations, problems, questions, and advice, be specific!! Do not be short and sweet: make sure to praise in some places as well, be supportive. No one likes their writing to be butchered. Try to understand where the author is coming from: you"re not an editor, you are a reader, if it"s a first draft, do not focus on spelling errors. Focus on whether or not the assignment functions. Understand the writing: discuss what you, as a reader, think about the author"s writing.
