Ferguson: risk is detrimental to the system, not that interested in social relations, interested in individuals. Menger: allows government to facilitate and help reduce risk in society. Only played a role when the system was already in motion. Polanyi: defines notion that society exists as compilations of different social relations that has been habitualized into different institutions (that more or less fit together) See previous 8 social institutions: formal system that looks like capitalism, always been an economy, some kind of production, distribution, ownership , three institutions that are particularly important. Land = nature (not economic category, has a deep relationship) Labor, human activity: wage labor, is alienating (humanity is treated as a tradeable private property. Welfare state emerges in 19th century as a way to protect people. Certain types of money that mediate certain types of activities (blood-wealth, bride-wealth, etc. ) Medium of exchange: see money, what are the surrounding institutions, situate every period of money in its institutional context.
