Session 10: shamans in the cave, part 1. Shanidar cave in iraq, 50 thousand years ago, 9 neanderthals in graves with pollen evidence of flowers (unknown who placed them there) Plague traces on neanderthal teeth, ate a lot of plants, including yarrow and chamomile (not nutritious, maybe could have had medicinal functions) Having rules about dead bodies gives people the opportunities to break those rules (taboo vs. transgression) Neanderthal bones with cut marks and processed the same way as animals. Important to not imagine neanderthals as lesser humans. Body anatomy and physiology within human range of variability: ergaster/erectus -> archaic h. sapiens (h. heidelbergensis) (300 tya) -> ahm h. sapiens ( 100 tya) -> bmh h. sapiens. Neanderthal, denisovans, h. floresiensis lineages from erectus/ergaster (lots of ways to be human) Look like present-day humans, act differently from modern-day humans. By 200 tya, bodies and skills within human range of variability. Large steeper slope of forehead prominent chin no occipital bun.
