Session 5: origin of the family, part 1. Hunting is a way of supplying food and social interaction. Many consider humans to be free from nature when they used tools to hunt, others consider this as the beginning of the human vs. nature battle. Ethiopia: middle awash valley (2. 5 million years bp). Tools were used to process animals killed in the hunt (cut marks found on animal bones). Found in area where tools could not have been created, indicates the owners traveled with tools. Tanzania: upper bed i (1. 7-1. 5 million years bp). Remained of a buffalo that was processed with tools found nearby. Quarry: meat requires a lot of planning to get. Effective hunting needed some level of cognition and social collaboration. Perishable- you can"t keep a lot at once. Chimps and humans use meat as a political tool, could help with kinshipping.
