Document Summary
Symbolic racists: people who are not overtly racist, but nonetheless do unconsciously hold racist beliefs. This has also been called cultural racism because racist ideas are embedded in our culture and seep into an individual"s thinking. Institutional racism: racism that is built into society"s social institutions (legal system, education system, economy, etc. ) Sexism: inequality based on sex and gender. Sex: biological characteristics associated with being male or female. Gender: social behaviors associated with a particular sex. Sexism: belief that members of one sex are superior to members of the other. This can involve unfair judgments about both men and women. Women earn, on average, 79-80 cents for every that a man earns. This difference is due to a variety of things: Statistical discrimination: paying a woman less because she is a member of a group that is statistically more expensive to employ.
