Document Summary

Variables: concepts that can have more than one value - they vary . Independent variables (iv): variables the researcher expects to cause an outcome. Dependent variables (dv): variables the researcher expects to be in uenced. Hypothesis testing: see if we are right. Must decide how to collect the data needed to test a hypothesis. Collecting data refers to the various ways that sociologists gather information about variables. Four most common data collection methods for sociologists: An attempt to observe the social lives of research subjects (people who are being studied) while also participating in the activities they are involved in. Experiments: carefully controlled arti cial situations designed to isolate causes and their effects. Consists of a control group & an experimental group - these groups differ only in that members of the experimental group are exposed to the hypothesized iv. Surveys: involve asking people questions about their experiences, attitudes, etc.
