PR 605 Lecture 69: Dysfunctional Outcomes

19 views2 pages

Document Summary

Conflict has destructive consequences on a group"s performance and the performance of an organization. Uncontrolled opposition creates discontent, which dissolves common ties and leads to a group"s destruction. There is also a lot of literature on how dysfunctional conflicts reduce the effectiveness of a group. Reduction in the cohesiveness of a group. Subordination of group goals to infighting among members. All forms of conflict seem to lessen the satisfaction of group members and inhibit trust among members of a group. When active discussions turn into open conflicts between group members, information sharing between members is significantly lessened. At the extreme, conflict can halt group functioning and threaten the survival of the group altogether. Negotiation penetrates the interactions of just about everyone in the group and organization. Managers negotiate with employees, peers, and bosses. An employee agrees to cover for a colleague for a couple minutes in exchange for a benefit in the future.
