Critical period: goslings and other birds have a critical period (around 36 hours) for bonding. Critical period: time window when something needs to occur. Sensitive period: some evidence that humans and other mammals have sensitive period for social bonding, not everyone agrees, but 6 months seem to be a replicable empirical finding. Studied infant rhesus monkeys separated from mom after birth. 2 surrogate mothers : one wire (but with milk), one with warm cloth. Monkeys spent more time with cloth mother, especially when scared. Contact comfort positive emotions afforded by touch. Strange situation task to evaluate infant attachment in u. s: 8 steps, p/1 enter room. I explores: s enters, p leaves, s interacts with i, p returns, s leave, p leave. I alone: s returns with i, p returns. 2 aspects of child behavior are made: exploration, reaction to mother leaving/returning. Secure attachment (~60%: develops through sense of connectedness and needs being met consistently.
