PHYS 215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Lipid Bilayer, Cytoskeleton, Microtubule
Document Summary
What is the role of the cell membrane: barrier to the surrounding environment, consist of a lipid bilayer containing protein, cholesterol, and carbohydrate. What is the role of the nucleus: control center of cell, contains genetic material (dna, chromosomes) Important role in cell function and reproduction: red blood cells do not have a nucleus. What is the role of the nucleolus: dark area inside nucleus, contains densely packed chromosomes. Intermediate in size: role in structure, microtubule lattice, lattice formed by all the cytoskeletal filaments. What is the cytoplasm: everything outside the nucleus, contains cytosol, fluid portion containing enzymes and fat droplets, contains organelles, membrane structures or vesicles. Endoplasmic reticulum: rough er = contains ribosomes and is involved in protein synthesis, smooth er = no ribosomes and is involved in lipid metabolism and forms membrane layer for transport vesicles. Golgi apparatus: modifies and sorts proteins made in rough er. Lysosomes: digest foreign and waste molecules.
