PFW 148 Lecture 8: Chapter 7
Document Summary
Training considerations for males and females: respond equally to training/exercise. Strength: testosterone allows males to gain greater muscle mass during puberty and allows for greater possibility of hypertrophy. Performance and endurance: male heart and lungs larger=greater oxygen potential, females have wider hip structure=less efficient running form. Heat tolerance: females have fewer sweat glands and higher adipose tissue= less tolerance to heat. Acog guidelines for exercise during pregnancy and postpartum. Inactive women or those with medical complications should be evaluated before exercise. No exercise in a supine position after the first trimester. Rise gradually from the floor to sudden drop in blood pressure. Avoid exercises that employ the valsalva maneuver (holding breath during intense activity) Use talk test or rpe to gauge exercise intensity. Iclicker question: inactivity is the most contributing factor to how well we function when we age. Environmental considerations: exercising in the cold, layer clothing. Profuse sweating is not likely to create an electrolyte deficiency.
