Meet all of the sitting supreme court justices ahead of the new term notes. There have been several times over the past 2 years when the sc had fewer than nine justices. In 2016,, there was a gap after the death of antonin scalia. The court only had 8 justices for more than a year as democrats and republicans fought. In october, kavanaugh was sworn in after a contentious confirmation process and the most narrow vote margin in over a century. Was appointed to the court in 2005 by president gwb, who nominated him as chief justice. He took seat sept. 29, 2005, after a 78-22 vote in the senate approving his nomination to become the 17th chief justice. He graduated from harvard college in 1976 and received his law degree from harvard 3 years later. He served on the dc circuit court of appeals before being appointed to the sc.
