Document Summary

Media research on crisis, extraordinary events, and disasters has focused on the interaction between the media, authorities of the state, and its people. News content in early journalism dealt with what was good reporting or how they report compared to the governments factual recollection of events. Crisis are reported as disaster marathons in long broadcasts and traditional communication in crisis approaches don"t assist in answering questions of why. The point of communication is about creating meaning and expressing commonality shared with community members. The media"s role deals with maintaining society though: Journalism"s ritual and communal functions deal with making a meaning of the function instead of its informational function. Journalism genres are viewed as ways to tell stories that have come through culture that they work in and with. Media events deal with preplanned contests, coronations, and quests that go to millions of people in the everyday routine of the media. Large scale events connect various locations of viewers.
