The first step to accurately identifying something seen before is actually seeing it correctly the first time. Visual sensation is the first process of finding light and extracting basic features of images. Sensations are evanescent and only a small part of what you sense is actually perceived. Attention is the process of filtering information sensed by the visual system to process more in- depth. Perception is the process by which visual information is attended, integrated, and linked to: Categorized through assigning meaning, utility, value, and emotional valence. The things you perceive populate your visual memory and experience. Three factors limit the significance of visual experience: Uncertainty means the probability of your ability of your senses to signal and detect things when noise occurs. Vision is plagued by noise from various sources associated with: The structure of the visual environment: occluding surfaces, glares, shadows. Some inherent to the optical and neuronal processes involved: refractive error, scattering of light in the eye.
