In the us, these laws tend to be sectoral, which means that each statute is narrowly tailored to specific types of business or concerns. In the eu, it"s more omnibus, which means it"s a comprehensive statute to regulate all uses of private data. Maybe in the future we will see this in the us, but for now it depends on the type of business being regulated. The three main statutory regulations when it comes to data are: entertainment records. The entertainment records deals with the video privacy protection act (vppa) (1988). This was originally for records of what was rented for video stores. This deals with preventing other people from knowing what you"re actually renting when people ask. It was updated in 2012 and interpreted to include video on other platforms like dvd and internet streaming. This covers all kinds of video, dvds and online streaming. There must be an opt in for disclosure of information.
