Immigration is amongst the most important media stories of our day. One immigration story deals with those who enter the us through official immigration channels seeking legal permanent residence (lpr) status. 463,000 new arrivals as well as more than 667,000 who are already living in the us and whose status is legally adjusted from a category such as refugee, temporary worker, foreign student, family member, or undocumented immigrant. In 2009, 1. 1 million people were granted lpr status bringing in the total number of people with. Green cards in the us to 12. 5 million, many of whom- 7. 9 million- are eligibly to apply for citizenship. The other story concerns an estimated 800,000 to 1 million people per year who enter by crossing the us border without government permission or who remain here after their visa has expired. The dept. of homeland security estimates that there are 10. 8 million people living in the us whose immigration status is unauthorized.
