Disfavored speech categories: fighting words likely to provoked immediate violent reaction, a true threat - laws that punish speech that threatens people is constitutional. Hate speech: s. c. has not established a legal category for hate speech, campus hate speech ordinances rarely pass constitutional review, merely offensive or vaguely threatening is protected by 1st amendment. People frequently use the media for inciting harm to others. Conflicting research shows that it is not clear if they"re correlated. Media content is one of many elements and not clearly the proximate cause of the harm. 1st amendment and violent media: s. c. struck down cali ban on sale of violent video games to minors. Interactive media are not a separate category of speech. Speech does not lost protection because it is attractive. Commercial speech: economically motivated or economically beneficial speech, speech that proposes a commercial transaction, paid for speech dealing with public interest.
