JOUR 103 Lecture 10: Gestalt theory lecture
Document Summary
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Based on the notion that the brain is holistic, with self-organizing tendencies. Gestalt is a theory of how the eyes and brain work together to make sense of visual images our brain creates order by forming whole images rather than looking at it as simple lines and curves. Symbolic messages consist of arbitrary signs recognized by most individuals to mean one thing. Abstract messages are those which make use of conceptual images to create meaning. Representational messages are those which consist of visual content that is indicative of the actual event. Gestalt is a psychology term meaning unified whole. Describes how people tend to organize visual elements into groups or unified wholes when certain principles are applied. Occurs when an object is incomplete or a space is not completely enclosed. If enough of the shape is indicated, people perceive the whole by filling in the missing information.
