MGT 500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 94: Cognitive Evaluation Theory, Motivation
Document Summary
Contemporary theories of motivation all have one thing in common, which is that each of these theories has a reasonable amount of documentation validating it. These are called contemporary theories because they represent what the latest thinking is in explaining motivation of employees. This doesn"t mean they are unquestionably right, though. Self-determination theory says that people, in part, prefer feeling like they have control over their actions and anything making a previous task they enjoyed feel more like an obligation instead of something they freely chose undermines motivation. A lot of research on this has focused on cognitive evaluation theory, which is a complementary theory that hypothesizes that extrinsic rewards lessen interest in a task. When someone is paid for their work, it feels less like something they actually want to do and more like something they have to do.
