Dark age - we don"t have writing or civilization. Subsistence- growing what they need to survive. People are scraping by to feed their families. Iliad and odyssey- describing greece during dark age. (850bce) writing reemerges in greece- very early form of greek. Polis- the idea of community of citizens- the people and the place are joined together. Citizens- run the city-state- active in the government. Not everyone that lives in the city- state is a citizen- slaves, women, the poor, and people that aren"t born in the city-state are not citizens. Western europe- the colonies are independent, but connected to the greek culture.
