Document Summary

Charlemagne (charles the great)- takes his role as a christian king very seriously. Sees himself as the father of his people. After his 4th wife dies, he decides not to remarry. He would not allow his daughters to get married. (charlemagne is very contradictory) he attempts to reform the church. No pets- noble women liked to keep squirrels as pets. He wanted the village priests needed to know how to read the bible and what he was talking about. Monks needed to know how to read and write efficiently. New laws- general: wants everyone to go to church on sunday. (no muslims, very small jewish groups) he thinks this will make things better and people happier. He says marriage is for life, no divorce, no multiple marriages. Missi dominici- two men that travel to other regions to make sure they are following. And tell them of any new laws being made.
