Document Summary

It is also a way a cell can replace the membrane lost by endocytosis. Active uptake means going up a concentration gradient and it requires energy. Oftentimes energy used is in the form of atp. We talked about carrier protein assisted active uptake using the potassium and sodium pump. Receptor mediated endocytosis: it takes up something very specific such as ldl (low density lipid protein) particles. Ldl is a method by which cholesterol is transported throughout the body. Ldl"s cannot be taken up by every cell and it needs a specific protein receptor (docking site). What happens on the surface of the ldl particles is that the ligands (extensions off the ldl vesicle) will bind to the receptor proteins. When that happens the membrane folds inward and forms a food vesicle. What is the original cell membrane plus those membranes are put into a vesicle.
