COM 316 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Nonverbal Communication, Paralanguage, Kinesics
Document Summary
Nonverbal communication encompasses everything that humans use to communicate that doesn"t include language. Raise hand in the classroom to get the professors attention. Immediacy queue: how close we put our bodies in relationship to another person. Problems associated with social science research in gendered nonverbal communication: Categorizes behaviour for sex rather than gender. Results may not still hold true in another setting. Does not acknowledge the presence of power in gender roles despite the large amount of influence it has. Paralanguage (paralinguistic queues): the vocal cues used to express language. Tone of voice, rate of speech, volume. Some people think that women are like children because of this. Women use touch to affiliate themselves with others when they are older. Men use touch to control when they are older. Proxemics: the space around our bodies and how we use it. Men take up more space than women. Artifacts: the personal objects that we surround ourselves with.
