KINES 300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Subtalar Joint, Plantar Fascia, Toe
Document Summary
Transverse metatarsal ligament: stabilizes all mt heads in the same plane. 2 sesamoids present under first mt head: increased wb of 1st ray and increased mechanical advantage of muscles but painful to walk on if inflamed. Inflamed when you lack shock absorption in foot. Treated by restoring absorption with insole or more cushioned. Rom: extension is critical functionally, flexion doesn"t matter much shoe. Hallux rigidus- pathology when big toe lacks motion. >17 of valgus = hallux valgus (bunion) Happens when big toe doesn"t extend normally and is usually genetic/common in people with very pronated feet. Intrinsic muscles of foot: allow for adaptation of the foot. Often they have to work hard if arch is too high or too low. Windlass effect of toe extension: support of arch - architecturally. Plantar fascia is stretched with toe extension to create a more rigid level arm/ more arch support. Creates more supination in forefoot for rigidness when walking.
