Document Summary

Fourier analysis: mathematical technique that breaks down complex waveforms into simple sine waves. Basilar membrane is a fourier analysis machine. Complex waves come into the ear and the basilar membrane breaks it down into (cid:518)x(cid:519) amount of simple sine waves 100 hz, 300 hz, etc. ) Breaks the combined waves into separate waves cat & bird sound wave (combined) broken into cat sound wave and bird sound wave. Sounds don(cid:519)t make it through the middle ear. Bones in the middle ear freeze up / don(cid:519)t move freely otosclerosis) Sensorineural: hair cells problem / inner ear problem. Loss of hearing that begins with the high frequencies. Uses air conduction and bone conduction to determine if the damage is inner ear or middle ear. If the sound does not increase with bone conduction, it is sensorineural loss (inner ear) If the sound does increase with bone conduction, it is likely to be a middle ear problem. Test of absolute threshold over different frequencies.
