Document Summary
Spoken language "a symbolic system in which meanings are communicated by speech" The study of sounds in a spoken language generally includes a description of how individual sounds are formed and information on the acoustic or auditory properties of a sound. " Speech "is both a pattern of the movements of the speech organs and a pattern of acoustic vibrations" Tends to be the primary modality of language. Speech community "a group of people who live within the same geographical boundaries and use the same language" Dialects "differences of that language in pronunciation, vocabulary, or grammatical construction; different usage patterns within a language. " Regional dialects "characteristic of people who live in a certain region" The distinction between language and dialect is one of degree. In addition to dialect, each person has a unique form of spoken language that is called an idiolect. Idiolect is a speech pattern that distinguishes us as individuals.
