The upside and downside is both mobility because you can rise or fall. You aren"t trapped as much and have more sense of self. France is incredibly top down - all rulers live in a couple of neighborhoods and is very centralized. In a democracy, there is not natural check on government power because the people aren"t powerful enough to check it. America is constantly engaged in associations: associations in aristocracy are against the family and is definitively against the system. The downside to parties in america is that there is no actual deliberation with the other side and the platform gets polarized. Two types of tyranny of majority: politics and thought: politics: when they violate the minority"s rights. Doesn"t think bill of rights/separation of power is enough to check political tyranny because: separation: majority controls every branch of power, bill of rights: possible to be ignored with a strong enough majority.
