Traditional indigenous approaches to healing and substance abuse/suicide: Reengaging people through culture and community (connecting people that became disconnect from the community) Effective at healing and prevention-alkali lake: demonstrated efficacy of ceremonies, sweat lodge etc. In the 1960s and 70s, 90% of the community was engaged in substance abuse, violence and suicide. The elders took all the men in the community and threw them in the lake, to reconnect them back to their culture. They had to bring other elders in to teach them cultural ways again. There were dry events, but more and more people start to come to the ceremonies. They were able to learn more about themselves and their culture and the community saw a huge shift in regaining resilience to get over this phrase. Some of the most effective techniques are, a reconnection to their spirituality and their culture. There are indigenous detox clinics: early example-round lake treatment centre and pound maker(cid:495)s lodge.
