Part 1: short answer questions (6 will be on the test, asked to do only 4) Regression - according to freud there are times when people are faced with situations that are so anxiety provoking that they can"t deal with it and they protect themselves by retreating to an earlier stage of development. Regression is a defence mechanism leading to the temporary or long-term reversion of the ego to an earlier stage of development rather than handing unacceptable impulses in a more adult way. Regression is the reversion to an earlier stage of development in the face of unacceptable thoughts or impulses. When confronted by stressful events, people sometimes abandon coping strategies and revert to patterns of behaviour used earlier in development.
