We will not be defining addiction: we will explore structural violence and how it encourages people to use drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, etc. Culture defines expectation of use of substance: what gets defined as problematic use is shaped by culture. Disruption or destruction of culture removes expectations. Disconnection between person and community can lead to "problematic" use. Gaining power and control over another country. Settlers colonized land that belonged to indigenous peoples. Colonized views often forced on the colonized. Attempts to assimilate the colonized: war. Can be within a country or between countries. Causes the disruption of culture, religion, etc. Cause the destruction of physical environment, economic system, and people: violence. Either the reality or threat of physical violence, or the reality or threat of structural violence. Most substances that enter society enter with low regulations. Things that are permitted at specific times.
