Thus, unlike cities in canada and the us, mexican cities are fairly old. However, mexico was colonized by the spanish which changed the trajectory of urbanization. At the time of the spanish conquest in the 16th century, tenochtitlan (now mexico city) had a population of approximately 300,000 people. Many pre-columbian cities in mexico are still in existence including tenochtitlan, present day mexico city. The capital city of the aztec empire and the largest pre-columbian settlement in the western. Tenochtitlan was a city-state located on an island in lake texcoco in the valley of mexico. Founded in 1325, it became the seat of the growing aztec empire in the 15th century, until it was captured by the spanish in 1521.
